St Ives is renowned for its
cosmopolitan mix of restaurants, art galleries, beaches
and stunning scenery. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend away,
a relaxing week on the beach,
or an energetic mix of surfing, golf, walking or
diving there is something here
for you.
Dating back to the first days
of Christianity in Britain St Ives is named after
a young woman missionary
called St Ia who, according to local legend,
floated over from Ireland on a
leaf. For much of its history St Ives was a fishing port,
home to about a
thousand fishing families who earned a living catching the local
Mackerel,
Herring and Pilchards. Much of the town’s historical charm remains in
the
granite cottages and the labyrinth of lanes and alleys in the area still known
as “Down-Long” or “Downalong”.
Although St Ives is still home
to a small fishing fleet many of the fishing boats
have now been replaced with
pleasure boats and the fisherman’s cottages
are now home to a thriving art
colony and a choice of
spectacular holiday accommodation.
